Foliage: Very scaly and can become more prickly with age. Color is green in summer to rusty brown in winter.
Preferred Soil: ph 6-8.5, very tolerant of high calcareous soils. Is very adaptable but seems to prefer dry gravely soils in open locations.
Common Ailments: Is a host plant for Cedar Apple Rust.
Attributes: An excellent wind break or screen plant but can be used as a specimen for its color and exfoliating bark. Wood is often used in fine furniture. A DNR favorite often requested for use in wildlife preservations.
